Dr Alice W. Lee -Â What If We've Been Treating Mental Health All Wrong?
Listen or watch on your favourite channelÂ
Show Notes
This podcast episode featured Dr. Alice Lee, a holistic and integrative psychiatrist practicing in Stamford, Connecticut, discussing her journey into energy psychology and medicine. Dr. Lee explained how she first encountered Thought Field Therapy (TFT) in 2003 through Mark Botnick, which led her to develop criteria-based energy testing techniques that go beyond traditional muscle testing.Â
She described how energy testing can provide real-time feedback about patient responses to interventions, including the impact of psychiatric medication withdrawal on digestion and nutrient absorption.
Dr. Lee shared her experience helping patients safely withdraw from psychiatric medications using integrated approaches combining energy medicine, functional medicine, and energy testing. The conversation explored how energy testing could potentially enhance other energy psychology modalities like EFT by providing objective assessment tools beyond subjective distress scales.Â
Dr. Lee expressed hope for the future of holistic psychiatry, including destigmatizing mental illness and moving beyond symptom-based labeling toward addressing underlying causes of mental health issues.
Takeaways
- Alice's journey into energy psychology began in 2003 after repeatedly hearing about Thought Field Therapy, leading her to learn EFT and successfully use it to help her own son overcome a phobia.
- She shifted from traditional diagnostic methods to energy testing, which offered faster and deeper insight into the underlying causes of conditions like depression and anxiety.
- Energy testing allowed her to track patient responses in real time, rather than waiting on lab results, and guided her toward more personalised treatment approaches.
- Alice developed a biomechanical truth-sensing technique to measure nutrient absorption and digestion, which revealed that lowering SSRIs often negatively impacted patients' gut function.
- She successfully helped one patient withdraw from six psychiatric medications in a single year by combining energy medicine with functional medicine approaches.
- Alice built a comprehensive criterion-based energy testing framework — refined over time into a 25–30 page assessment — to guide holistic treatment decisions.
- Energy medicine is described as information-based, working virtually on biology, but still requiring significant expertise and discernment to apply effectively.
- She hopes the future of psychiatry will focus on destigmatising mental illness and addressing root causes rather than simply managing symptoms with medication.

00:00:08.520 --> 00:00:24.720
Hello, everyone, and welcome back to another episode of The Fourth Wave in Therapy. I'm absolutely thrilled today to have with me a wonderful colleague who shares a common interest with the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology. Dr. Alice Lee is actually one of their board of directors at the moment.
1
00:00:25.030 --> 00:00:33.310
But Dr. Lee is a holistic and integrative child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, practicing in Stanford, Connecticut. Beautiful part of the world there.
2
00:00:33.640 --> 00:00:51.250
And since 2002, has integrated functional and energy medicine techniques to pioneer new ways to safely support psychiatric medication withdrawal. So interested to dive deep into this today, Alice. Along the way, she became certified as a Reiki master.
3
00:00:51.630 --> 00:01:00.210
Set a legal precedent for paving the way for holistic clinicians, and became board-certified in integrative medicine, not once, but twice.
4
00:01:00.620 --> 00:01:14.450
She's also written more than 258, it's probably more than that now, holistic articles, we have links to these below, and built a criterion-based energy testing approach to assess a patient's functional status
5
00:01:14.710 --> 00:01:21.760
And she also has a podcast, which I encourage everyone here to listen into, called The Holistic Psychiatrist, and the link is below.
6
00:01:22.130 --> 00:01:38.660
So, as I said, Dr Lee is a Board of Director member of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, and obviously that has been part of her journey as well. She has lots of articles from them that she's written for them, and they are linked below as well. Dr Li, thank you so much for your time today.
7
00:01:39.580 --> 00:01:43.240
Well, thank you so much for having me. I'm really honored to be on your show.
8
00:01:43.730 --> 00:01:59.720
It's fantastic, and maybe if I could just start with the most obvious question, which is, obviously, as a traditionally trained psychiatrist in the medical field, why and how did you end up exploring energy psychology techniques?
9
00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:06.530
Well, energy psychology came very early as a holistic journey for me,
10
00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:11.470
I think, very early on,
11
00:02:12.260 --> 00:02:20.870
my life experiences paved a way for me to be much more open to holistic approaches. In 2002, I was very gratified
12
00:02:21.420 --> 00:02:31.290
To find that there were clinicians ahead of me who had organized, you know, the orthomolecular conferences, and…
13
00:02:31.730 --> 00:02:47.540
I was able to meet with Abram Hoffer, back then in 2002. But in 2003, it just happened that over a couple of days, somebody mentioned thought-field therapy to me, and I thought, well, maybe it's something…
14
00:02:48.470 --> 00:02:50.270
You know, important for me to know.
15
00:02:53.900 --> 00:02:54.350
Because…
16
00:02:58.540 --> 00:03:05.500
Anytime something comes up a couple of times within a couple of…
17
00:03:09.350 --> 00:03:10.040
You're curious.
18
00:03:12.530 --> 00:03:14.600
Freezing, by the way.
19
00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:17.980
Yeah, I just heard that as well.
20
00:03:18.500 --> 00:03:20.330
Yeah, you were freezing, and I…
21
00:03:20.750 --> 00:03:27.200
Okay, you were a bit too, so we'll just, just maybe if you take it from the thought field therapy bit again.
22
00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:33.020
I don't know, I don't know what happened there, but I seem to be back.
23
00:03:35.270 --> 00:03:35.990
Can you hear me?
24
00:03:42.040 --> 00:03:45.640
But at what point did you, notice that I was freezing?
25
00:03:45.770 --> 00:03:48.800
Just the, bit about thought-field therapy.
26
00:03:49.560 --> 00:03:51.840
So just when thought field therapy came into your…
27
00:03:52.060 --> 00:03:56.500
By the way, your voice is still kind of stuttering. Your voice is…
28
00:03:56.890 --> 00:04:03.140
Okay, let me have a look, because my internet is okay, but…
29
00:04:04.530 --> 00:04:06.210
How's it going? Is there, some…
30
00:04:07.130 --> 00:04:08.410
How's it sounding at the moment?
31
00:04:10.760 --> 00:04:13.040
It's good. Okay. It's good right now.
32
00:04:13.230 --> 00:04:16.529
Alright, let's, put the energy field around so it all goes…
33
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:21.220
Oh, we're waiting on…
34
00:04:26.510 --> 00:04:27.590
I'll start with that.
35
00:04:28.100 --> 00:04:29.510
Fantastic. Okay.
36
00:04:32.220 --> 00:04:32.970
Let's start over.
37
00:04:34.200 --> 00:04:52.650
So, I learned about thought-filled therapy within 2 days of each other. The first time was when I was at a luncheon with a psychologist, and she mentioned that a colleague of hers had gone to a conference, and she had seen someone overcome a phobia in, like, within 5 to 10 minutes.
38
00:04:53.110 --> 00:04:59.230
And the first time I heard that, it went in one ear and out the other, because as a psychiatrist, that's like…
39
00:04:59.870 --> 00:05:04.430
somebody telling you that they saw somebody walk on water. It's just not…
40
00:05:05.150 --> 00:05:08.660
Something within my paradigm at the time.
41
00:05:10.180 --> 00:05:19.030
So then, two days later… Fair?
42
00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:21.650
B.
43
00:05:23.190 --> 00:05:25.410
By the way, Peter, you're frozen again.
44
00:05:25.720 --> 00:05:27.640
Aw, I can hear you.
45
00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:31.470
It is saying something… And I can't hear you talk.
46
00:05:31.810 --> 00:05:34.240
Okay, okay, okay.
47
00:05:34.870 --> 00:05:37.900
Can you hear me now? I don't know why it's doing this.
48
00:05:39.470 --> 00:05:41.270
Can you hear me now? Am I okay?
49
00:05:42.560 --> 00:05:58.880
Yeah. Okay. Should I just keep talking? I can hear you now, but you're kind of, like, your… your video and your vision and your audio is not in sync. Yeah. And also, should I just keep talking even though you're frozen?
50
00:05:59.620 --> 00:06:00.760
Yeah, I can hear you.
51
00:06:01.280 --> 00:06:04.040
Did you hear me talking, and it was okay on my end?
52
00:06:04.350 --> 00:06:07.560
Yeah, yep, it is. So, maybe we'll just keep going.
53
00:06:07.630 --> 00:06:16.300
my video was okay, even though you might have been frozen. Yeah. Okay, let me try to shrink your picture. I'm gonna exit full screen.
54
00:06:17.710 --> 00:06:19.270
Let's see if that helps. Okay.
55
00:06:24.670 --> 00:06:34.900
So, I'm gonna shrink the video on my end. Okay. And see if that works better, okay? And I'm gonna take out my video of my face, so… Okay. Okay, let me start over.
56
00:06:35.740 --> 00:06:40.150
Okay, so the question was, you said.
57
00:06:41.350 --> 00:06:44.410
Why don't you pose your question, and we'll start from there. Amazing.
58
00:06:46.060 --> 00:06:57.070
So, Dr. Lee, can you pos… tell us… you've traditionally trained in psychiatry, and obviously, somewhere along the way, energy psychology medicine entered your world. Tell us a little bit about how that happened.
59
00:07:00.320 --> 00:07:17.600
Yes, energy psychology happened back in 2003, and it was very interesting how it entered my life. At that point, I had just integrated functional medicine about a year before, and then, I was at a luncheon with a psychologist, and she mentioned that
60
00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:24.950
She had seen a colleague go to a conference and saw someone heal from their phobia within, like, 10 minutes.
61
00:07:25.490 --> 00:07:36.800
And at the time, it just went in one year and out the other, because for a psychiatrist who's training traditionally, it's just not possible for someone to overcome their phobias that quickly.
62
00:07:38.370 --> 00:07:57.030
And then, two days later, I met Mark Botnik, and Mark right now, is also on the board of directors. He's the secretary this year, for ASEP, and he also used the words thought field therapy, and he was using it at that time in a mobile treatment unit.
63
00:07:57.400 --> 00:08:01.510
And I ran across Mark because one of my patients was too phobic.
64
00:08:02.330 --> 00:08:07.940
to leave her house, and so she couldn't come to the outpatient clinic that I was working at.
65
00:08:08.630 --> 00:08:25.760
So I was looking for a mobile treatment unit who can go to her, and help her there. And Mark just happened to be, I think, the director at the time. And so, he was mentioning Thought-filled therapy, and at that point, now I've heard it twice within 2 days.
66
00:08:26.280 --> 00:08:44.250
And I was very curious. I'm always very curious and very open to new approaches. And so, I said, I'd like to learn from you about thought-field therapy. And he, came to my home, and he showed me how to do EFT.
67
00:08:45.340 --> 00:09:03.070
And I thought, wow, this is really interesting. It's… I really liked it because it was pillless, and, I was clearly, able to learn from him how helpful it was. And so, one of the earliest, earliest tests
68
00:09:03.350 --> 00:09:08.540
I gave him was, my son at the time had a phobia.
69
00:09:09.170 --> 00:09:27.380
And he was afraid… he had this fear that he would be abandoned, because he had a traumatic experience. And so, I asked Mark to come to our home and help my son use and apply this technique to help my son overcome the phobia. And sure enough.
70
00:09:27.900 --> 00:09:30.390
in half the time that I purchased.
71
00:09:31.140 --> 00:09:47.910
he cleared the phobia for my son, and he was 6 at the time, and he was very skeptical at the time that it would help him, but it did, and so the second half of the appointment, Mark healed my son from a fear of the dark, which is very common in a 6-year-old, right?
72
00:09:48.500 --> 00:10:05.990
And so I started learning about EFT, and from Mark, I also started to get this idea that I might be able to use energy testing as, one way that I could, you know, access information. Because at the time,
73
00:10:07.290 --> 00:10:09.420
EFT was…
74
00:10:09.880 --> 00:10:17.230
Routinely using a scale from 0 to 10 to measure how well that technique was able to heal the problem.
75
00:10:17.720 --> 00:10:30.050
And so, I wanted to be able to learn how to do energy testing as well. And in 2003, with Mark's guidance, I started to learn a little bit more about some of the techniques
76
00:10:30.610 --> 00:10:38.260
for energy testing. And so, now I had energy testing and EFT from energy medicine, and then I had
77
00:10:39.170 --> 00:10:52.700
a growing knowledge about supplements from functional medicine. And as I continued with my journey, I kept integrating them together. The more I learned, the more I integrated, and at the time, my goal was
78
00:10:53.360 --> 00:11:10.490
to help my psychiatric patients to be able to be free from their need for psychiatric appointments. I wanted to help them get off their meds, I wanted them to heal underlying causes, and I had a very simplistic idea of what that meant at the time.
79
00:11:10.900 --> 00:11:25.300
Over time, with the ability to use energy testing, I learned a lot more about all of the underlying causes that we tend to put under one diagnostic, kind of.
80
00:11:26.740 --> 00:11:29.920
I don't know, like a roof, and so…
81
00:11:30.600 --> 00:11:38.280
if you call it depression, it might have a million different causes for depression. If you call it anxiety, there might be a million different causes
82
00:11:38.620 --> 00:11:54.970
for anxiety. And I was discovering that as I went along. I also compared functional testing with energy testing, and I was tweaking energy testing in such a way to meet my needs as a physician, and so I was comparing my results
83
00:11:55.280 --> 00:12:02.990
with the lab results. And, it just so happened I was able to create a method that
84
00:12:03.570 --> 00:12:18.720
ended up being much more helpful for my patients than the lab results. So, as I proceeded, in my journey as a holistic psychiatrist, I started to veer more towards energy testing and using that as a skill to gather data.
85
00:12:19.320 --> 00:12:28.800
Which was, very helpful, because energy testing is, independent of distance, and also energy,
86
00:12:29.250 --> 00:12:46.440
healing, can shift biology very quickly, and so you can't just wait a week to see what the result of the energy testing happened to, you know, show up in the biological body. So, learning about energy testing was a very great,
87
00:12:47.040 --> 00:12:55.560
boon to my practice. It was a really useful tool, and I kept developing everything, you know? So, you start with an idea, you start tweaking it.
88
00:12:55.960 --> 00:13:11.920
You start to check, you know, the relationship between an intervention and an outcome through, you know, muscle testing or energy testing the patient. And pretty soon, I was kind of evolving very quickly, in my holistic practice.
89
00:13:12.400 --> 00:13:25.120
But I would just say that even after, you know, 23 years of being a holistic clinician, I'm still growing, and I'm still learning, and the universe continues to challenge me with
90
00:13:25.710 --> 00:13:37.160
more and more difficult patients. Patients who have protracted withdrawal and haven't been able to heal for years, or, you know, my last big challenge in 2000…
91
00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:49.280
2023 was a patient who I helped get off 6 psychiatric medications in a year, and she was able to do it smoothly and remain well. So.
92
00:13:49.860 --> 00:14:05.010
the universe gave me tougher patience than that after that. So, it's just been, always, both a humbling experience to be a holistic psychiatrist, but also a very empowering experience at the same time.
93
00:14:05.680 --> 00:14:23.590
I love this, this is amazing. Could we… Oh, thank you. In case anyone listening in is perhaps unfamiliar with energy testing, do you mean muscle testing, or is it more than that? And can you explain a little bit about, for a newcomer, what is happening in energy testing, or even muscle testing?
94
00:14:25.470 --> 00:14:44.970
Well, one of the articles, where, I describe criteria-based energy testing is on my website, under the medication withdrawal section. So you can go there, and it actually has an article that was published in a journal, and it kind of gives you ideas about what I do.
95
00:14:45.390 --> 00:14:49.290
I wish everybody knew how to do energy testing.
96
00:14:49.680 --> 00:15:01.650
Because it's so useful. Let's begin with basic principles. The first basic principle that I discovered in my journey as an energy healer is that
97
00:15:02.580 --> 00:15:16.130
my patients were able to respond with different energetic kind of conditions, depending what was going on in their mind. So, let's say if they were thinking 2 plus 2 is 4 versus 2 plus 2 is 6,
98
00:15:16.550 --> 00:15:25.780
they would have these different energy shifts, so they typically are strong with 2 plus 2 is 4, if you were to muscle test them, and they would go weak with 2 plus 2 is 6.
99
00:15:26.280 --> 00:15:28.290
They would be strong with a happy thought.
100
00:15:28.850 --> 00:15:41.030
They would go weak with a sad thought. They would be strong with a positive word. They would go weak with a negative word. And it was very clear that their energy was shifting. So, I asked myself.
101
00:15:41.970 --> 00:15:54.210
So… will this person shift their energy if I said 2 plus 2 is 4 in Chinese, and they didn't know Chinese? Or if I said 2 plus 2 is 6 in Chinese, and they didn't know Chinese? Oh, interesting!
102
00:15:55.090 --> 00:15:56.620
Yeah, so I still… I started…
103
00:15:57.400 --> 00:16:03.580
checking it out in all my patients. And to my great amazement, everybody could do it.
104
00:16:04.430 --> 00:16:26.270
So, if I were to write… Wow! Yeah, exactly. So, at the time, I was muscle testing everyone using their big muscles, like their big arm, and I would push down. And they would be strong with 2 plus 2 is 4, they'll go weak with 2 plus 2 is 6, and I would give them a few directions. I would say, don't try to, you know, second guess.
105
00:16:26.570 --> 00:16:28.970
or think that I expect you to be psychic.
106
00:16:29.570 --> 00:16:32.120
Just hold out your arm as you normally do.
107
00:16:32.630 --> 00:16:38.600
And listen to what I'm saying. And when you listen, hold as hard as you can with all of the three trials.
108
00:16:39.470 --> 00:16:42.230
And let's see what you get. Is it a strong? Is it a weak?
109
00:16:43.100 --> 00:16:54.410
And then what… the other thing I did was I would write on an index card exactly the three things I would say in Chinese. And since my Chinese is very basic and rudimentary, I would say something like.
110
00:16:55.040 --> 00:17:14.329
1 plus 1 is 2, 2 plus 2 is 3, 3 plus 3 is 4, something like that. I would write it down on my index card, I would put it in… away in my desk, and then I would say it in Chinese. Like, I would say it in Chinese to my patient, and I would say, 1 plus 1 is 2 in Chinese, and they would just listen, and they would hold their arm really hard.
111
00:17:14.930 --> 00:17:19.730
And 99.9% of the times, my patients got it right.
112
00:17:20.359 --> 00:17:37.730
And then I would take out my index card, and I would show it to them, and I'd say, this is what I said in the specific order, and they would be all amazed, you know? And the ones that weren't able to do it were the ones who got really anxious, performance anxiety, they tried to second-guess what the answer was.
113
00:17:38.070 --> 00:17:46.140
So they weren't letting the tool show itself, because they were interfering with the way energy was flowing through their bodies.
114
00:17:46.600 --> 00:17:54.040
So once I, got this feedback from my patients that people do respond with this, you know, shift.
115
00:17:54.750 --> 00:18:00.120
My next goal, and this is something I asked Mark Botnik, was, well, can I…
116
00:18:00.630 --> 00:18:13.170
do that for my patients? And, you know, are there different ways of doing energy testing other than someone pushing on your arm? And there are. There's lots of ways you can connect.
117
00:18:13.630 --> 00:18:22.990
A biomechanical feedback mechanism that shifts, depending what your energy is, to the energy state of your body.
118
00:18:24.250 --> 00:18:38.470
And so I started to learn different ways to do that, and now my way is like this. 2 plus 2 is 4, 2 plus 2 is 6. You can see on my fingertips that there is a biomechanical shift with
119
00:18:38.880 --> 00:18:50.190
an energy shift that correlates with my body. So if I say 2 plus 2 is 4, there's a magnetic-y kind of state of being that keeps that nail kind of stuck on the side of my thumb.
120
00:18:50.620 --> 00:19:03.250
And then if I say 2 plus 2 is 6, and I think that, it's slippery. So there's an energy shift that manifests in the way in which this biomechanical feedback mechanism came through.
121
00:19:04.440 --> 00:19:16.500
Now, the next step was, okay, so let's say I can sense what is true and false, even if I don't know. What can I do with this tool?
122
00:19:17.280 --> 00:19:27.240
And so the first, idea I got, inspiration, you could say, was, okay, well, people who are doing EFT are using scales from one
123
00:19:27.800 --> 00:19:46.040
0 to 10. So maybe I can use scales, and I can, create scales, and I… my very first scale was from 0 to 100, and it was for, well, two scales. One was for absorption of nutrients, and one was for digestion of nutrients.
124
00:19:46.570 --> 00:20:02.740
And through that scale from 0 to 100, 0 being no digestion during a period of time, and… or no digestion, and I didn't use time scales at that time. It was very, experimental. So 0 was…
125
00:20:03.040 --> 00:20:07.510
You know, no digestion. 100 is great digestion.
126
00:20:08.120 --> 00:20:18.110
And I was muscle testing and was getting this funny result that patients were getting really poor, absorption and digestion when I was lowering their SSRI.
127
00:20:19.390 --> 00:20:24.160
Now, at the time, it was very early on in my holistic practice, so I really didn't know
128
00:20:25.030 --> 00:20:27.820
how to support SSRI.
129
00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:52.190
how to support SSRI withdrawal properly. Like, for example, nowadays, I will use 5-HTP and check them for pyridoxyl 5-phosphate, and I would, like, do all sorts of things now, but at the time, I didn't really know. All I knew was, whoa, they're not really absorbing and digesting the way they used to. So, I used energy techniques, and I would…
130
00:20:52.710 --> 00:20:58.380
You know, like, work with EFT, or, set positive intentions.
131
00:20:59.250 --> 00:21:06.840
And the patients really did respond well to an energy medicine intervention. And so,
132
00:21:07.430 --> 00:21:09.650
What happened was, over time.
133
00:21:10.210 --> 00:21:25.330
It was probably a year or two after I realized that SSRIs and withdrawal interfered with digestion absorption, that I saw in a pamphlet written by Abram Hoffer, who was a pioneer in functional medicine or orthomolecular medicine.
134
00:21:25.820 --> 00:21:46.280
about psychiatry, he wrote in his pamphlet that 95% or more of the serotonin system is actually found in the GI system. And that was when I connected something that was written somewhere and was known scientifically was something that I was observing with my energy testing.
135
00:21:46.940 --> 00:22:05.270
So, energy testing became not only a wonderful tool, like a lab test for my patients, but it became my mentor. It became a way for me to learn things early on, because you can't always rely on an encyclopedic knowledge about everything
136
00:22:05.710 --> 00:22:12.250
When you're just trying to learn as a holistic psychiatrist, when you're just beginning, you think…
137
00:22:12.830 --> 00:22:31.100
that, oh, I can just use this, you know, multivitamin mineral, and everything will be cured with it. Or you think, oh, I can just use EFT and everything will be okay with that. But with energy testing, you start to understand, you know, how do you integrate what's happening with the patient's body when you lower a medication?
138
00:22:31.740 --> 00:22:33.810
In time, I ended up with
139
00:22:34.350 --> 00:22:48.990
what I call the complete analysis. It was 45 pages long, it had thousands and thousands of data points, and many, many scales and tables of scales. And out of that 45 pages, I picked the best
140
00:22:49.490 --> 00:23:02.270
questions that I was using the most frequently, and I started Phase 2 of my complete analysis. It started off with maybe 10 pages of very relevant questions and scales that I had created.
141
00:23:03.120 --> 00:23:12.690
Now it's, again, about 25 pages, maybe 30 pages, of different scales that I've found useful and created.
142
00:23:13.480 --> 00:23:25.270
Which is really great, because in energy testing, you can create things out of thoughts and words, and you can make scales quickly, whereas if you had a mechanical lab test, it might take
143
00:23:25.640 --> 00:23:33.980
10 or 20 years before you can have that idea manifest at a physical level. So, just like,
144
00:23:34.310 --> 00:23:37.610
you know, we can get data about objects from Amazon.
145
00:23:38.340 --> 00:23:55.260
Which is, you know, where you can go online, you can buy things here in the U.S, and so you can go there and you can say, okay, the dimensions are this, you know, this is what it does, here's a video about it. You can get all the data, and then you can give it, you know, your data-driven credit card.
146
00:23:55.730 --> 00:24:19.130
None of it is real, the money isn't real, the object isn't real, it's just showing up in your computer. But sure enough, after you pay for it, the next day you can see that physical object arrive, you know, at your doorstep. Yeah, in energy medicine, everything is virtual. Everything is basically information-based. You're using information
147
00:24:19.330 --> 00:24:25.210
To support the ripple effects of how that information has an impact on biology.
148
00:24:25.540 --> 00:24:41.530
And so it's really exciting when you have that tool, but also you have to respect, not only is it powerful, but it also has limits. And so you start to learn, you know, where does it, you know, where are its boundaries? How can I use the functional medicine
149
00:24:42.210 --> 00:24:46.710
optimally, and how can I use energy medicine optimally? And,
150
00:24:47.270 --> 00:24:53.960
Where, you know, where do the limits of my current level of expertise end?
151
00:24:54.390 --> 00:25:08.160
Because even at this level of my expertise, sometimes I think, well, maybe this patient needs additional clinicians, like an acupuncturist, or a chiropractor, or have neurofeedback.
152
00:25:09.080 --> 00:25:16.250
Or maybe another therapist who would have more time to discuss therapeutic issues with the patient.
153
00:25:17.190 --> 00:25:24.460
despite the fact that you… I can juggle a lot of different fields, You know, patients…
154
00:25:25.180 --> 00:25:29.170
Only have an hour, you know, with me each time, so you're still limited.
155
00:25:29.850 --> 00:25:44.460
I love that analogy of the whole Amazon thing. It's a bit… it's a bit like Wi-Fi. It's the whole Wi-Fi bit as well, isn't it? It's kind of like, yes, you do this thing online, and magically the product appears in the doorstep, and how did that happen? If… yeah, I love that analogy, it's fantastic. So, tell me…
156
00:25:45.190 --> 00:25:46.120
By the way,
157
00:25:47.270 --> 00:25:59.360
I just got a book recently about quantum computers that will be coming out in a few years, which are going to be thousands and thousands of times faster than our silicon-based computers. So…
158
00:25:59.730 --> 00:26:07.890
You know, as amazing as energy medicine might be, and we're using computers to kind of explain its phenomenon.
159
00:26:08.440 --> 00:26:19.390
I think that once we have quantum computers, maybe we can be a step closer to understanding energy medicine, and the quantum field, and how we use
160
00:26:19.940 --> 00:26:23.150
Thoughts as quantum energy to shift things, so…
161
00:26:23.280 --> 00:26:31.810
Absolutely. Which, it does bring me to the question, because of all of your experience in this space, and your medical knowledge, do you think…
162
00:26:32.410 --> 00:26:45.700
the energy testing part has been missing from modalities such as thought field therapy or EFT, if we were just strictly talking about the application of tapping. Do you think the energy testing part
163
00:26:46.130 --> 00:26:54.680
is a necessary component that perhaps, you know, should be included, because it gives you so much more information than just that, you know, client's
164
00:26:55.300 --> 00:27:13.960
subjective unit a distress rating out of 10, or something. Like, it seems like it's wrapping around and accessing other information, particularly that bit about saying the, you know, incorrect sum in Chinese, and yet the body is still picking it up. Like, is that something that you're noticing or wish
165
00:27:14.700 --> 00:27:17.010
That the whole training field kind of included.
166
00:27:18.330 --> 00:27:30.810
What a wonderful idea! I never really thought about it in that way, but I think it would be very useful. The reason why is because there are so many techniques out there.
167
00:27:31.580 --> 00:27:47.330
And, it would be very helpful, actually, not just to learn how a patient heals using a technique, going from 0 to, let's say, 10. You can use any kind of scale, really. But if, you can use a scale.
168
00:27:47.790 --> 00:27:52.380
And access information neutrally as a clinician, and learn that skill
169
00:27:53.120 --> 00:28:05.960
And you're able to compare, okay, I learned logosynthesis, I learned… I learned Reiki, I learned this or that. I'm gonna treat all these patients that are similar with these techniques for a specific problem.
170
00:28:06.880 --> 00:28:19.600
which one of these techniques actually make the most difference? You could literally, or you can use energy testing to figure out, okay, I have this problem. Which of these techniques that I've learned in my little basket of energy tools
171
00:28:20.220 --> 00:28:35.970
is best for applying it to the patient in this situation. The more you are able to question and get answers, through an energy testing approach, the more, I think.
172
00:28:36.410 --> 00:28:42.440
Number one, you'll be able to know, like, which techniques are best.
173
00:28:43.040 --> 00:28:48.980
When to use it, how to use it, which patient or client might benefit from which tools.
174
00:28:49.530 --> 00:28:56.700
And it can, you know, like as a therapist, that might really help smooth things out.
175
00:28:57.460 --> 00:29:00.370
And it may also move the field of energy medicine.
176
00:29:03.790 --> 00:29:11.800
forward quickly. Yeah. Because as long as we can compare different techniques, we can start to see, oh, wow, this technique
177
00:29:12.320 --> 00:29:23.660
was really effective, or this technique, you should not use that technique in this way. Here's an example. One of the things I discovered about energy medicine
178
00:29:24.070 --> 00:29:39.010
Is that, for some very fragile patients, when you do energy medicine, and this is where it's somewhat limiting, and you never imagined that energy could do this, but the more you, you know, try to heal someone.
179
00:29:39.550 --> 00:29:46.210
The more you're putting, instructions in the body to do certain acts of healing.
180
00:29:46.880 --> 00:29:54.620
And if the person doesn't have the physical wherewithal, the physiological mechanisms in place to do it.
181
00:30:07.320 --> 00:30:11.190
People call… stress.
182
00:30:19.540 --> 00:30:21.100
Strong investors.
183
00:30:22.040 --> 00:30:23.510
Or a healing Christ.
184
00:30:27.020 --> 00:30:35.510
It's only to diminish with decompensating. And what I've learned is that people can decompensate because
185
00:30:36.160 --> 00:30:41.560
They are receiving the energy in the instructions, but they're not able to
186
00:30:41.960 --> 00:30:59.510
do the work inside their body. And when I used energy testing to measure those 3 days after they applied a lot of energy work to see what's going on in the body when a patient reports a 3-day period of what they call a healing crisis, which might be more fatigue or anxiety or sleeplessness.
187
00:31:00.090 --> 00:31:11.280
I see at least one component, which is that nutritional status went down, and it went back up at the end of 3 days. So whatever the energy was trying to do, it was.
188
00:31:18.820 --> 00:31:19.210
Doesn't move in.
189
00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:28.690
I didn't know.
190
00:31:29.700 --> 00:31:30.390
nutrients…
191
00:31:33.230 --> 00:31:34.880
to do it with. Hmm.
192
00:31:35.390 --> 00:31:35.930
Sorry, I'm just…
193
00:31:37.470 --> 00:31:37.860
Hmm.
194
00:31:42.010 --> 00:31:44.920
Yeah. Yeah, I got that in the end. Yes, yeah.
195
00:31:45.920 --> 00:31:50.450
Can you hear me? Did you? Okay. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you were frozen for a while, I just kept…
196
00:31:51.510 --> 00:32:03.270
And it makes sense, doesn't it, with what you said about what is known in psychiatric medicine, about the impact of those medications on the gut microbiome and the GI kind of system, that
197
00:32:03.940 --> 00:32:22.660
the whole, kind of, link to the nutritional, yeah, I guess, system in the body, and the efficiency of that is actually improving as that energy shift happens. I mean, how, Dr. Lee, how have you found the embracing of
198
00:32:23.290 --> 00:32:27.820
Energy medicine in psychiatry amongst your peers or your colleagues?
199
00:32:31.850 --> 00:32:40.640
Well, I think in general, psychiatrists like to stick with, functional medicine.
200
00:32:41.990 --> 00:32:50.720
Because they're more… conditioned… to work with physical pills, right? They're… they're…
201
00:32:54.780 --> 00:32:59.790
They want data that they can hold and measure.
202
00:33:04.040 --> 00:33:12.830
But, you know, certain energy techniques can make a huge difference. So, yeah, it is becoming more, accepted.
203
00:33:13.290 --> 00:33:24.000
But you have to realize, you know, it's scary for a doctor to use energy work because, they could lose their license, you know, depending on where they're…
204
00:33:24.750 --> 00:33:32.560
you know, medical board is in their state, because energy medicine is… You know, just consider…
205
00:33:40.580 --> 00:33:42.770
Hold there, woo woo, unto it.
206
00:33:43.360 --> 00:33:52.810
Mmm, yeah, absolutely, and advice to anyone listening in, obviously, to explore what is the licensed boards in your area as well.
207
00:33:53.680 --> 00:34:09.340
I mean, what do you hope, you know, Alice, what do you hope the future holds for perhaps holistic psychiatry, patients, obviously medications such as antidepressants, like we've talked about? What do you hold as hope for the future?
208
00:34:18.909 --> 00:34:20.050
I really hope…
209
00:34:20.550 --> 00:34:35.340
That the future will destigmatize mental illness. And take it out from this shameful place where patients bear the burden of psychiatry's
210
00:34:40.239 --> 00:34:55.989
ineptitude? True. It is not true that mental illness is just your brain, you know, misfiring, or a chemical imbalance with your brain. It's not true that somehow, subconsciously, you want to be sick.
211
00:34:56.370 --> 00:35:12.960
And therefore, it's showing up as a mental illness. So there's a lot of myths about mental illness that I hope will be swiped away in the future, and people won't feel stigmatized. And I think when you're feeling stigmatized by the label, and you feel like it's kind of a doom…
212
00:35:13.930 --> 00:35:23.470
doomed kind of label that you can never heal from, I think it creates a lot of isolation and hopelessness.
213
00:35:23.990 --> 00:35:38.630
Sometimes anger, sometimes depression, but sometimes people who aren't well-treated in psychiatry end up, you know, doing these, you know, shoot… the mass shootouts and things like that, because they don't have any…
214
00:35:38.970 --> 00:35:49.290
hope. They are isolated. Yeah. But the most important thing, I think, when we get to that place in the future, is I hope that,
215
00:35:49.770 --> 00:36:08.130
someday, people will be able to heal underlying causes of mental illness, and stop calling it depression. Instead, you know, it could be a liver issue, it could be an infection, it could be a combination of genes and enzymes. Whatever the underlying cause, let's not just
216
00:36:08.740 --> 00:36:11.500
put a label, you're depressed, as if…
217
00:36:12.990 --> 00:36:27.630
you know, that describes everything, and now we're gonna give you a medication for a symptom rather than an underlying cause. So that's… that's my goal, to plant the seeds as a holistic psychiatrist, that someday in the future,
218
00:36:28.650 --> 00:36:35.040
The benefits of our enlightenment will be able to really be felt by patients.
219
00:36:35.610 --> 00:36:48.930
who have been waiting for this field to evolve for a long time, and who have really suffered, because we have been pretty stubborn about our paradigm. Yeah.
220
00:36:49.160 --> 00:37:02.370
Yeah. Totally agree, and I am just thankful for people like you in our world who are absolutely, you know, pushing this forward, and really showing, from a data point of view as well.
221
00:37:02.810 --> 00:37:27.380
how these approaches can work. So, just from my small corner of the world, to yours, thank you so much for the work that you're contributing in this space, and every patient, obviously, benefiting from this. Dr. Lee, everybody, and all of Dr. Lee's articles are below, linked, as well as her podcast and all those articles that we talked about, just so that you can explore a little bit further.
222
00:37:27.600 --> 00:37:50.190
Of course, you may be inundated, Alice, with requests now. So thank you so much, everyone. I hope so. Thank you, everyone, for listening again, and I hope that, yeah, you found a gem there that really, you know, might just sort of expand, your own thinking as well in this space. So, we look forward to seeing you, on another episode, everyone, of the fourth wave of therapy.
